Although overfishing depletes fish stocks in Africa’s coastal fisheries, aquaculture has the potential to meet future demand if governments mobilize more investment in infrastructure, technology, and support for smallholder producers. African aquaculture production has increased by a factor of 5.6 since 2000, thanks in particular to the strong demand for aquaculture products due to rapid urbanization, unbridled population growth and a change in consumer eating habits. This is according to a report published on Monday, February 3, 2025 by the Malabo Montpellier Panel, a group of international experts specializing in agriculture oriented towards improving food security in Africa. Entitled “Fish-friendly: Policy innovations for sustainable fisheries and aquaculture in Africa”, the report states that the volume of aquaculture production in Africa has increased from 0.45 million tonnes in 2000 to 2.51 million tonnes in 2022, which represents the fastest growth rate on a global scale.
