Morocco is the third African exporter of avocados after Kenya and South Africa. Sales on the international market are on an upward slope despite climatic hazards affecting production.
Morocco established a new avocado export record in 2023/2024. During the period under consideration, the country exported 60,000 tons of the fruit to the international market, marking a 33% increase compared to the stock shipped during the previous campaign (45,000 tons). This feat is due to a 50% increase in production (70,000 tons) and a strong rise in European demand, with Spain having been penalized by drought.
The Moroccan avocado sector aims to increase its export volume of the fruit to more than 100,000 tons on the international market by 2027. Avocado plantations covered more than 9,600 hectares in 2022, according to FAO data.
