At the junction of Egypt, Libya, Chad, and Sudan, the desert hides beneath its surface a vast water reserve. This reserve is located at varying depths, sometimes less than 60 meters below the surface.
In 2004, geologist Omar Abdallah drilled a well in one of the shallow areas to uncover this resource and irrigate local farms. Families can cultivate fruits, vegetables, beans, sorghum, alfalfa, and wheat.
The geologist warns of the need to monitor the replenishment of the aquifers from which humans draw. The Sudanese government has allowed the construction of 38 wells subject to regulated use. Monitoring equipment provides information on groundwater levels.
The challenge is to meet water needs while preserving the resource.
