Will meat consumption peak, like we used to think about peak oil? Noisy and passionate vegan demonstrations along with concerns for health and the environment have made this a very real question. The economic aspect is no less significant, as the global turnover of the meat industry is $1.2 trillion! The plant-based meat industry is certainly much smaller: $800 million in 2018/2019 compared to $74 billion for the US alone. But the sale of meat alternatives has experienced exponential growth, as demonstrated by the success of Impossible Food or Beyond Meat. Pork and beef consumption is no longer increasing in the US and Europe. This year, 15% of British Christmas dinners were meat-free. OECD and FAO experts believe that meat consumption will peak in 2020 in the US, with consumption per person per year of 70kg, along with consumption of 70kg in Europe. It should remain at this level for the next few years.
