The organization Land Core is launching soil health promotion programs to transform soil quality into a valuable asset within the farming community. Its aim is to encourage insurers to reward farmers who are most active in practicing sustainable land management. Existing policies offer little incentive for cover and rotation practices, which may seem costly for long-term benefits.
By creating an actuarial model that considers the risk reduction provided by environmentally respectful land management, Land Core hopes to persuade insurers to offer incentivizing rates. The resources utilized stem from data collected over a 17-year period, focusing on corn and soybean fields in the Midwest. The initiative is funded by the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research (FFAR).
