The meat industry – not pulling its weight in the fight against climate change

The world food industry, from agriculture to the agri-food sector, is responsible for 25 to 30% of greenhouse gas emissions, according to the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. In particular, too few meat industry companies are assessing the impact of their activities on the environment. A study covering forty-three of the largest meat companies on the stock exchange showed that only Tyson Foods and Marfrig published reports on the environmental impacts of their activities. For comparison, 23% of petrol, gas and mining companies published this type of report.
