Ford is trying to do its part to combat climate change by recycling coffee waste from McDonald’s into car parts. The carmaker will collect food waste from the fast food giant’s landfill sites and store it in its laboratory where it will be transformed into bioplastics. As well as reducing food waste, this will help lighten the weight of car parts, thus resulting in greater fuel efficiency and therefore a reduction in CO2 emissions. Every year, millions of kilograms of coffee flakes – the dried skin of the grain that falls naturally during the roasting process – constitute a material waste which, when heated to a high temperature and mixed with plastic and other additives is transformed into granules . These granules are then made into a car parts, such has headlight housings and other interior or engine components. These parts are approximately 20 % lighter and require up to 25 @ less energy during the molding process.
