The LaserWeeder robot eliminates weeds using technology based on robotics, lasers, and artificial intelligence. For the founder of Carbon Robotics, the company that markets this robot, applying AI to the agricultural sector is an opportunity to attract tech investors.
Three rows of lasers scan the ground over six meters wide to detect and destroy unwanted weeds without harming crops. The robot’s ability to recognize the weeds to be treated is the result of extensive learning about the space occupied by these weeds in terms of both surface area and thickness.
According to the manufacturer, farmers can eliminate approximately 200,000 weeds per hour using this method. Such weeding practices lead to savings in labor and chemical inputs. Harvests become more consistent and of higher quality.
