Rice, Becoming More Expensive and Scarce

Several rice-producing countries have decided to intervene in the conditions of rice exports and pricing.

Last July, India decided to halt basmati rice exports, thereby increasing its price and reducing its availability in the international market.

Vietnam and Pakistan have set a minimum selling price for their rice production.

These decisions are affecting the availability of this staple food, including in Africa, especially in West Africa, a region that accounts for 60% of African rice consumption.
