Comprendre les enjeux de l'agriculture

Sustainable food products, such as sweet kelp beer and bread made from regenerative wheat, are being highlighted as part of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Big Food Redesign Challenge. Food systems account for about one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions, significantly impacting biodiversity, land, and water resources. The concept of regenerative agriculture, though not widely known, promotes climate-friendly farming practices and is supported by companies like Wildfarmed.

Supermarkets play a crucial role in influencing consumer behavior and reducing indirect emissions, with increasing initiatives in Europe to promote plant-based products. European retailers such as Ahold Delhaize and Lidl aim to boost plant-based product sales to reduce livestock-related emissions. Rising food prices are prompting consumers to reconsider the value of their diets, according to retailers like Waitrose. They recognize that low-cost foods often come at a high environmental and biodiversity cost.

In Africa, initiatives such as artificial insemination aim to develop heat-resistant cattle breeds to increase the supply of animal protein. In France, manufacturers of vegetarian meat substitutes can continue labeling their products as “vegetarian steak” or “vegetarian sausages” following a recent court ruling.
